City Info: Hoa Lu
The ancient capital of Hoa Lu (Hwah Loo) is 13 km from Ninh Binh and provides a glimpse into the history of Vietnam. The area was used for only 41 years, established by the Dinh Dynasty in 968 C.E. where there were numerous temples, pagoda and pavilions, but due to the destructive nature of time and weather, only a few buildings are left. Tucked away amid the limestone karsts, Hoa Lu was provided with natural protection from the wars, nevertheless King Ly Thai To moved the capital to Thang Long (now known as Ha Noi) in 1010. Hoa Lu is a nice area to wander around in and is popular with domestic tourists, as well as foreigners. There are the requisite food stands including ice cream and drinks. Just past the buildings, there is a stairway to climb to top of one of the karsts providing an amazing view of the area. Make sure to check out the plant and animal life; we saw some of the strangest ant/spider/bug thing there, living on enormous stands of striated bamboo. It's a great place for a picnic after a visit to Tam Coc.
