Reasons to go: Teach English

Many young adults go abroad every year to teach English in various countries throughout the world, especially in Asia. Japan and Thailand are hotbeds for English teachers, but Vietnam remains off the map for many. There is a lot of need for qualified and dedicated teachers in Vietnam, though. In fact, English is being taught in many cities around the country; some as volunteer positions, others that pay (and often quite well).

While it may seem like something for the young and child-less to do, teaching is actually a great way to earn an income for your family. Most don't teach more than 25 hours a week, leaving plenty of free time to explore with the kids, while also providing sufficient income.

In order to teach temporarily in Vietnam, you are required to have a Bachelor's degree and a TEFL certificate (to teach long-term requires a work permit). There are several organizations that offer TEFL certification courses, the best being those that require you to attend class and have a teaching aspect of the course. I used International TEFL for my certification and was pleased with it; a friend of mine completed their course in Ho Chi Minh City and has been working in Vietnam for the year since.

Getting a job isn't difficult, but it's important to research the school a bit (the New Hanoian website is a great place to start) and decide what level you are interested in teaching most: children, teens, adults, or business. There are plenty of opportunities for individual tutoring, as well, in the evenings and weekends.

It's important to remember the purpose of these classes in mind: it's for the student to learn English. One of the perks is that you get to live abroad and earn a good living, but most important is the students' education. Too often this is forgotten by backpackers as they zip through a country leaving disappointed students in their wake.

For those who are planning to stay in-country for a while, this is a great way to balance work and family; I did it for four months before heading back to the States for a while. A very brief period in comparison to some who will spend years abroad. It is very do-able for those qualified and willing.
