Reasons to go to Việt Nam

Volunteering abroad has long been the realm of gap year students and recent college graduates, but things are changing. More and more families are signing up to volunteer around the world, including Vietnam. While many organizations still do not have provisions to accommodate families, some are happy to help your family find a way to help others.

Our volunteer time was spent in Tam Ky, Quang Nam, Vietnam where we worked at two orphanages: the Tam Ky Baby Orphanage and the Home of Affection. It was, quite honestly, the best thing we have ever done and led to an intense love of the country and its people. Months later, we are still in touch with the folks in Tam Ky and still raising funds, gathering donations for the orphans we grew to love.

Research the organization that you choose, ask for references from other families and ask lots of questions. Decide if your kids are old enough to understand the importance of what they are doing (under 6 is difficult). Get in contact with current volunteers and find out what's needed, what conditions are and make a judgment call for your family's involvement.

You will be embarking on a grand adventure, so be sure to check and double-check as much as you can prior to departure. For our never-traveled-before family, it was the perfect first step to seeing another country. We loved it enough to stay in Vietnam for nearly seven months. What joy could it bring to your family? Give it a try and see.
